In a significant milestone for urban redevelopment, 265 residents of Chikhalwadi have finally received possession of 2bhk flat in Mumbai for their long-awaited homes. The redevelopment project in the Chikhalwadi area near Grant Road had been pending for nearly 25 years. In 2026, the project was successfully completed, and 265 families were handed over the keys to their newly constructed apartments, marking the end of a prolonged wait and uncertainty.

The residents of Chikhalwadi, located in the bustling Grant Road locality of Mumbai, had been waiting for over two decades to move into their new homes. Their patience was finally rewarded when Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde distributed the keys to the beneficiaries at a special ceremony held on Wednesday. The event was attended by several dignitaries and marked an emotional moment for families who had endured years of delay and hardship.
While redevelopment and rehabilitation projects are not new to Mumbai, the Chikhalwadi project had become symbolic of prolonged delays. Over the years, as many as 36 developers had taken up the project but failed to bring it to completion. It was only when Shripati Developers stepped in as the 37th developer, with support from local MLA Parag Shah, that the long-stalled redevelopment finally moved forward. Their intervention ensured that the affected families could at last move into a 2bhk flat in Mumbai that met modern living standards.
The project was executed under the government-approved cluster redevelopment scheme. Previously, many of the residents lived in cramped units measuring around 120 square feet. Under the new development plan, each eligible family has been allotted a spacious 585 square feet 2bhk flat in Mumbai, significantly improving their quality of life. For families that had spent decades in small, congested homes, receiving a 2bhk flat in Mumbai represents not just a housing upgrade but a transformation in lifestyle and dignity.
The new residential complex is equipped with several modern amenities. Office bearers of the Chikhalwadi Residents’ Association, including President Surekha Parbhani and General Secretary Chintamani Dalvi, also attended along with a large number of beneficiaries and their family members. The event celebrated the realization of a dream that had seemed distant for many years.
During the key distribution ceremony, Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde emphasized the government’s commitment to accelerating cluster redevelopment projects across Mumbai. Developer Satish Chaturvedi announced that every beneficiary family would receive a 24-inch color television set, adding to the celebratory atmosphere of the event.Speaking at the function, Shinde further highlighted that several government bodies are actively working to improve housing conditions in Mumbai. These include the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the Slum Rehabilitation Authority (SRA), the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), and the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA). He also informed attendees that redevelopment work involving approximately 17,000 homes is currently underway at Ramabai Ambedkar Nagar in Ghatkopar.
